Spider Control in Fort Worth, TX

Spiders are not the most welcome of house guests. They can crawl around your living room and startle your family members and pets. If you have ever had to deal with a spider infestation, then you know how difficult it can be to eradicate them once they get into your home. The good news is that you don't have to deal with them on your own.Fort Worth pest control has ways to get rid of house spiders, so you don't have to worry about them anymore. Read on to learn more about house spiders in Fort Worth and how to combat them.

Types Of Spiders Commonly Found In Fort Worth

Spiders are a normal part of the Fort Worth environment. They are even an important part of the ecosystem and food chain. However, many people find spiders to be creepy and scary, especially when they find them in their homes. There are several different types of spiders in Texas that you could encounter, including:

  • Black widow: Black widow spiders are a species of venomous spiders. The females are known for their black coloring and red hourglass markings on the underside of the abdomen. They can grow up to 1 3/8 in length. The younger black widow spiders are orange and white, while older ones are mostly black. The young ones may also have one or two reddish marks on their underside. Black widows often build their messy, irregular webs at ground level in dark corners or behind loose bark on trees. People commonly spot them in woodpiles, garages, sheds, and barns. Black widows are active at night and may bite if disturbed by humans during the day, especially if they have just laid eggs.
  • Brown recluse: The brown recluse spider comes inside homes more often than black widows do but can still be found outdoors as well. Brown recluses like to hide under boxes, furniture, and other places where they feel safe from predators. The brown recluse has a violin-shaped marking on its back. They range in size from 1/4 to 1/2 inches in length. The young ones look very similar to the adults, only smaller and paler in color. They prefer undisturbed areas and often choose storage rooms, closets, and crawl spaces. The female spins an irregular web, but rather than catching prey in it, they more often use it as a retreat. Both the male and the female are venomous spiders.
  • Wolf spider: Wolf spiders don't build webs. These speedy little creatures chase down their prey. They are relatively large spiders, and their size and hairy appearance tend to alarm people; however, they are more of a nuisance than anything else. As active hunters, they usually stay low to the ground. If they follow their prey indoors, they normally keep themselves along the walls or under the furniture. Wolf spiders can bite humans if they are handled or picked up, but their bite isn't medically dangerous.
  • Yellow sac spider: Yellow sac spiders build retreats that look like silk tubes or sacs where they like to hide during the day. Outside, they often spend time under foliage, rocks, and the underside of window sills. Inside, they build their retreats in the corners of walls and ceilings. They are light yellow to cream-colored small spiders, with the females being slightly bigger than the males. This type of common household spider is the most likely of all species to bite humans.
  • Brown house spider: The brown house spider is also known as the false black widow. Brown house spiders look similar to the black widow but don't have the red hourglass pattern. They are a purplish-brown color that may even look black, and they have light-colored markings that may be so faded that they are hard to detect. Brown house spiders spin irregular webs and prey upon insects and other spiders, including the black widow. They are very common in houses and other man-made structures.

With over 3000 species of spiders in the United States, the ones listed here are by no means the only ones you may encounter in your home or yard. If you are concerned about the appearance of a spider, contact the professionals from All-Safe Pest & Termite, who can identify it and advise you on any action needed.

The Harm That Spiders Could Cause

While most spiders do not bite or cause any harm, there are some that can cause serious illness or even death if they are not treated quickly. If you believe that you have been bitten by a spider, it is important for you to monitor your symptoms and seek medical attention as soon as possible if necessary.

The black widow and the brown recluse, while they are not aggressive, can have the most dangerous bites. The venom in their bites causes the most harm to humans. For example, the brown recluse spider has venom that can cause skin ulcers and lesions. The venom from this type of spider does not usually cause death but can be very painful and may require surgery to treat.

The bite of a black widow spider can cause muscle aches, nausea, and difficulty breathing. The pain usually starts within a few minutes of the bite and peaks after 1-3 hours. The pain associated with a black widow spider bite may last for one to three days before gradually subsiding. With proper medical treatment, a black widow bite rarely results in death.

Other spider bites are not as dangerous, but can still cause a reaction in people. The bite of a wolf spider, for example, may cause pain and swell at the site of the bite. Bites from the brown house spider and some types of yellow sac spiders create similar symptoms to the black widow and brown recluse but are less severe. Other yellow sac spiders have bites that are painless and don't result in anything serious.

What Attracts Spiders To Come Inside Homes?

Spiders want the same things nearly every living creature wants. They want a place where they can find water, shelter, and food. Often, your home provides some or all of that.

Sources of moisture in your home include leaky pipes, overflowing sinks and toilets, damp basements, and water-damaged wood. Spiders are attracted to these sources of moisture because they need water to live. If you have a leaky pipe or other moisture problem, you can expect spiders to come inside your home. The same goes for basements and crawlspaces with standing water and damp wood.

Spiders want shelter from the elements and predators. Your home provides a great place for spiders to find shelter. The undisturbed spaces in your house like closets, under furniture, basements, and even the dark corners of your home offer them many safe hiding spaces.

As for food, spiders feed on the many insects and pests that often invade homes. The insects and pests that spiders eat include flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, moths, ants, and other small insects. They are a natural part of the ecosystem and help control pest populations. But if you see large numbers of spiders in your home, it's time to take action.

What's The Best Way To Get Rid Of Spiders In My House?

One of the first things you should do to keep your home spider-free is to make your home less attractive to spiders. Here are a few spider-prevention tips:

  • Take steps to reduce clutter in your home and other structures like sheds and garages. This will eliminate many of their hiding spots.
  • Frequently clean your home, including closets and storage areas, making sure to remove all spider webs and spiders with a vacuum.
  • Keep all yard waste, debris, and firewood away from the exterior of your home.
  • Repair any cracks or openings in your home and seal any gaps or holes in the exterior walls of your home. This will help to prevent spiders from entering through these openings.
  • Address any other pest issues you may have, as a spider infestation is often the result of another pest problem. You will have fewer spiders in your home if their prey and other pests are eliminated.

You may want to consider hiring a professional pest control company for assistance if your spider problem is severe or you think you may have some of the more dangerous species of spiders in your home.
