How To Get Rid Of Fleas In Houston Homes

Here at All-Safe Pest & Termite, we hear a lot of horror stories about fleas. There are many ways people attempt to kill fleas in Houston with little or no success. One reason people have such a hard time is that they go to the internet for answers and they find flea control ideas that sound great but then they discover that they don't deliver on the promises. As an example, you're not going to get rid of the fleas in your home by putting plates on the floor with soapy water in them and desk lamps over those plates. The promise is that fleas will leap toward the warmth and the light, land in the soapy water, and die. While you'll have several fleas fall for this trick, you won't get all of them. Flea eggs aren't going to jump into that soapy solution and neither will developing larvae. The larvae of fleas are wiggly worms, not leaping insects. You're also not going to get all of the fleas in your home before they bite you and reproduce. This clever home remedy is only a partial solution. A better idea is to use the following tips provided by the experts here at All-Safe Pest & Termite. Better yet, reach out to us and request flea control service for your Houston home.

Tip 1: Suck 'Em Up

The source of your infestation is tiny eggs, flea dirt, and larvae hidden in your rugs, upholstered furniture, pet bedding, and other key areas. When you vacuum frequently, it breaks the cycle of infestation. As you work to vacuum key areas of your home, be sure to:

  • Get cracks, recess, and gaps. These are common trouble spots for difficult flea infestations.
  • Be thorough. Don't forget to get underneath beds and furniture.
  • Get every inch of your couch and other living room furniture, including underneath the cushions.
  • Use a high-powered vacuum.
  • Disposed of the bag outside.
  • Vacuum every day until the infestation has been corrected.

Tip 2: Get 'Em With Heat

Heat can destroy fleas in all stages of development. If you run an item through a 30-minute dryer cycle, it should be enough. What should you put in the dryer? Here are a few ideas.

  • Pet bedding should be the first to go in your dryer.
  • If your pet lays on your bed, put your bedding through the dryer.
  • If your pet lays on blankets, throw rugs, furniture covers, towels, clothing, or some other item that can be put through a dryer cycle, these should be the next to go through.

Tip 3: Check With Your Vet

Pick up products prescribed by your veterinarian and administer them to your pet(s). There are many products that help to arrest a flea infestation and prevent fleas from targeting your furry family members. Your vet may prescribe collars, oral treatments, powders, bath products, or a combination. Not only will these products help to arrest the infestation in your home, but they'll also work to prevent your pet(s) from bringing more fleas in from the outside.

Tip 4: Check For Flea Activity

  • Use a flea comb to routinely check your pets for flea dirt or adult fleas.
  • Look for fleas floating in the water after bathing your pets.
  • Use flea traps to detect continued flea activity in your home. Keep in mind that these are not a remedy, they're only for monitoring and evaluation.

Tip 5: Get Pest Control If Needed

There are conditions that can cause a flea infestation to be particularly difficult to arrest. A common problem we see is that rodents bring fleas in with them. If the rodent problem isn't corrected, they can keep bringing fleas in to replace fleas that are removed. A licensed and experienced pest control technician can tell you if there are mitigating circumstances that need to be addressed.
